3 Tips to Improve Your Skills
How to improve your academic essay writing, or TOEFL writing, IELTS writing? Well, we are going to discuss 5 ways to improve your writing.
We are discussing specifically formal writing, business writing or academic writing.
The first tip to improve writing skill is, do not use contractions(This is for academic writing). What is a contraction? Words like Don’t, can’t, Shouldn’t, couldn’t, wouldn’t, isn’t, haven’t, hasn’t are contractions. It’s the short form of two words put into one. For example, “Don’t” is the contraction of “Do Not”. “Can’t” is the contraction of “Cannot”. So it’s much better to actually write the word in full in academic and formal business writing. So instead of contractions, use full form.
The second tip to improve writing skills is, avoid “there is” or “There are.” So why do we avoid “There is” or “there are”? The reasons is, When we write, we want to write our ideas clear and concise. Means, We want our sentences to be to the point. There are some extra words that are not needed. So let’s look at some examples:
a. “There are many issues that students face in college.”
So that’s an okay sentence. But if you want to make a better sentence, that is more appropriate for academic writing, You can change it. You can write instead “Students face many issues in college.” You don’t need “There is” or “There are.”
b. “There are many development projects that the UN supports.”
Again, We don’t need “There are.” We can just say, “The UN supports many development projects.”
By getting rid of “There is” or “There are”, your sentence become stronger, and to the point.
The third tip is to avoid words such as “really, very, a lot, so” This weakens your writing. Your writing isn’t strong if you use these types of words. For example:
a. “Many Students think the university is very hard”
So now, We have “very.” how could we improve the sentence? Well, instead of using “very hard,” just use a stronger word in the first place. So we can write, “Many Students think the university is difficult.”
b. “Bill 399 is really controversial”
So again an academic writing avoids the usage of “really.” We can say, “bill 399 is controversial.”
