Operating System, It’s Functions and Types
An operating system is basically a translator between hardware and the user and acts as an interface between hardware and the user. Actually, the operating system works as a translator for both hardware and the user. The computer understands the binary language contains only two numbers ‘0’ and ‘1’. Information is processed by the combination of these two numbers. But we can’t understand the binary number combinations. The operating system helps to translate into a user-friendly language.
Function of the Operating System
1. Process Management
Process Managment means whatever the process in your system that will be managed by the operating system. Suppose that you are working with two applications, three applications, four applications or even more. Then that management of those applications must be by the operating system and that will be managed by the operating system.
2. Memory Management
As you know there are primary memory and secondary memory in the computer like RAM, ROM, and Harddisk. That the management of that type of memories is also required. So there is memory management that means the management of the memories is also the second function of the operating system. The operating system manages what will be stored on the RAM and what will be deleted from the RAM.
3. Input/Output Management
You know that without input/output, your computer will not do anything. That means, in a mean time of working with the laptops or computer, you will always do some inputs as well as outputs. That input/output management is also the next function of the operating system.
4. Security Management
Nowadays every operating system is the inbuilt security management system. One of the examples is the FIREWALL. That type of security will be managed by the operating system.
5. Device Management
Nowadays there are thousands of devices available which you can use with your computer, like mobile phone, Webcam, USB etc. That type of devices will be managed by the operating system.
Types Of Operating System
There are many types of Operating system. Some main types of operating system are:
1. Batch Operating System
The number of users puts the number of jobs or tasks in the system and that system will execute the jobs one by one serially. That is the Batch Operating System. This is utilized by MS-DOS.
2. Multitasking OS
Multitasking OS means when the operating system can handle more than one task at a time then it is called Multitasking OS.
3. Multiprocessing OS
Nowadays the computers are coming with i3, i5, i7 and multi-core processor. That means there will be one processor as well as there will be four processors or eight processors. So that more than one processor can be handled by the operating system.
4. Real-Time OS
In the Real-Time OS, there will be a time fix. That means if the work will be done in a particular time otherwise it will be discarded. The example of the real-time OS is the Robot. There are two types of Real-time operating system, Hard Real-time OS, and Soft Real-time OS.
5. Distributed OS
Whenever your data is distributed to the multiple locations and by using the network or anything else, your data which is located in the multiple locations can be handled by the operating system. That is called Distributed OS.
